School buses have been around for hundreds of years. In fact, the first school bus was actually introduced in the early 1600’s! Over the decades the school bus has evolved and shifted to suit different trends and safety ideas, eventually becoming the big yellow bus that we are familiar with today.
But there are a few fun things you might not know about these giant student haulers! Read on to learn some fun facts!
Not having seatbelts is actually a safety feature
This sounds counterintuitive but the way the interior of a school bus is designed is actually intentional for safety. The high seat backs, no seat belts, and even the spacing between the rows is carefully done in order to keep your kids as safe as they can be.
The colour of yellow used is ACTUALLY called ‘National School Bus Glossy Yellow’
The colour yellow has been shown to be the most eye-catching colour, which makes sense for a school bus. You want drivers and pedestrians to see the vehicle easily and recognize it quickly. But in Japan you’ll often see school buses designed to be obvious in different ways… They have school buses that look like trains, cats and even characters like Hello Kitty and Pikachu!
Buses are electric (well, they’re coming!)
In the 1600-1800’s school buses were pulled by horses. Then came the invention of the motor, so buses shifted to being gas powered vehicles. Now, electric vehicles are becoming the rage, and school buses are following suit! Ontario is welcoming 13 new electric school buses to its roads and fleets this year!
Did you know? Switzer-CARTY Transportation is the first school bus company in Ontario to pilot the eLion Electric School Bus? We’re ahead of the curve!
There’s a jet-powered school bus in the USA!
A normal school bus travels at up to 100km/hr. But a man in the United States decided to have some fun with a traditional school bus and added a Phantom fighter jet engine to it. He turned the bus into a jet-powered vehicle that can reach speed of up to 590km/hr! It even shoots flames out the back. So, if you’re in a hurry to get to school, this is the bus to take!
China has the largest bus in the world
The largest bus in the world holds 300 passengers. It is 82 feet long- compared to normal buses that are only 64 feet long. This bus has 3 separate sections so it can turn corners and has 5 doors for passengers to get on and off!
School buses are popular
School buses carry thousands of kids to school each day around the world. In North America they transport more than half of all students, meaning over 26 million kids ride the bus daily. There’s almost 1 million bus-riding students in Ontario alone! Thanks to awesome drivers and thorough safety practices, the school bus is considered the safest way for students to travel to and from school.
Now that you know a little more about school buses, you’ll be sure to notice them as you drive around your community!
